STARKVILLE, Miss. – The No. 38 NC State men's tennis team fell to No. 20 Mississippi State 5-2 at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre on Sunday afternoon. NC State moves to 7-6 on the season, while Mississippi State improves to 7-3.
The match marked NC State's fourth contest against a top-25 team in its last seven matches.
Match Recap:
NC State came out strong and clinched the doubles point. The Pack's top duo of Nick Horton and Alexis Galarneau defeated No. 26 Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey in a decisive 6-1 victory. The win marked the duo's eighth win of the year and first victory over a ranked doubles opponent.
After MSU claimed a victory on court three, Ivan Saveljic and Michael Ogden won in a tiebreaker for a 7-6(7-5) victory at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, Mississippi State claimed the overall win after winning five singles matches.
No. 72 Galarneau provided the Pack's lone singles win of the contest, downing Mate Cutura 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 from the No. 3 singles spot for his 15th win of the year.
No. 58 Horton fell at No. 1 singles to No. 4 Nuno Borges, Sean Burnette dropped a 6-2, 6-2 match at No. 6 singles to Trevor Foshey and Niclas Braun downed Georgiy Malyshev 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, as Mississippi State took a 3-1 lead.
Galarneau picked up a victory at No. 3 singles, but Mississippi State clinched the match, as Giovanni Oradini downed Ogden 6-3, 7-6(7-4) to clinch the match. Strahinja Rakic added a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles over Igor Saveljic to conclude the match.
