
No. 9 NC State Rifle Finishes Fourth at GARC Championships

AKRON, Ohio – The ninth-ranked NC State rifle team concluded competition in the 2017 Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships with a fourth-place finish Saturday afternoon inside the Louis and Freda Stile Athletics Field House.
After firing a team score of 2304 in the smallbore event on Friday, the Wolfpack logged a team score of 2356 in air rifle Saturday to conclude the championships with an aggregate team total of 4660.
Second-ranked West Virginia won the championship with a score of 4725, while Nebraska was second with a 4679 and Kentucky claimed third with a 4667 clip. Army took fifth with a 4649, Akron was sixth with a 4630, Memphis earned a 4629, Ole Miss tallied a 4624 and Navy rounded out the scores with a score of 4621.
Lauren Phillips led the way for NC State in air rifle on Saturday with a score of 594 in the preliminaries to advance to the finals session where she earned a third-place finish. Lucas Kozeniesky turned in a score of 591 to finish in a tie for 12th place.
Claire Zanti tallied a score of 586, as NC State's third-best score and Derya Pekari finished right behind her with a mark of 585. Caitlyn Ford was the final member of the Pack's counting lineup and recorded a 581 in air rifle.
Zach Eisenberg also enjoyed a strong performance equaling Pekari's score with a 585 clip and William Marciniak fired a 581.
The Wolfpack garners a fourth-place finish in the GARC regular season and claims fourth in the conference championships.

NC State narrowly missed earning a bid to the NCAA Championships, as the squad finished ninth and the top-eight teams qualify for the championships. Fortunately, Ford and Kozeniesky earned individual bids to compete at the NCAA championships for the second consecutive year on March 10-11 at The Ohio State University.
