PARADISE ISLAND, BAHAMAS – The NC State men's basketball team defeated second-ranked Arizona, 90-84, Wednesday evening in the quarterfinal round of the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis.
Allerik Freeman scored a career-high 24 points, while Braxton Beverly, playing in just the third game of his collegiate career, added 20 points to lead NC State's offensive attack.
The Pack never trailed by more than two points and only trailed for a total of 1:29 in the game as NC State finished with a flurry to pull away from the Wildcats.
Arizona took its final lead of the game with 5:08 remaining on a dunk by Keanu Pinder to make the score 75-73. NC State responded with a dunk of its own as Torin Dorn found Omer Yurtseven underneath to tie the game. After a Wildcat miss, Beverly connected on his third three-pointer of the game to give the Pack a lead it would never relinquish.
Yurtseven's dunk and Beverly's three-pointer were the start of a 13-1 run for the Pack that allowed NC State to pull away. The Wildcats only made two field goals in the five minutes of the game and one of those field goals came as the final buzzer sounded.
After allowing Arizona to score the first two points of the game, NC State responded with a 15-4 run to take a 15-6 lead six minutes into the game. Beverly keyed the run as the freshman hit two three-pointers during the run to help the Pack take early control. Arizona battled back to send the game into halftime tied at 40.
The Pack opened the second half by connecting on its first six field goal attempts and shot 52 percent in the final 20 minutes. NC State connected on 21-of-25 free throw attempts in the second half and finished the game shooting 80 percent from the foul line (28-of-35).
Senior forward Abdul-Malik Abu made his season-debut Wednesday night off-the-bench and played 17 minutes and finished the game with eight points and eight rebounds. Abu and Beverly teamed up to lead NC State's bench which outscored Arizona's bench, 39-6.
Sophomore guard Markell Johnson finished the game with eight assists and two blocked shots, while fellow sophomore Omer Yurtseven added 11 points and nine rebounds.
The win is NC State's second-ever regular season win over a top-two non-conference opponent. The Pack's other win over top-two opponent was on Dec. 30, 1958 when NC State defeated No. 2 Cincinnati, 69-60.
NC State will return to action Thursday at 3 p.m. in the semifinals of the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis. NC State will face the winner of the Northern Iowa-SMU game. The game will be televised on ESPN2 with Karl Ravech and Dick Vitale calling the action.
