Galarneau ends fall competition ranked No. 16 in singles, Galarneau and Ogden ranked No. 32 in doubles
November 15, 2017
RALEIGH – NC State men's tennis sophomore Alexis Galarneau earned a program-best No. 16 singles ranking in the final fall Oracle/ITA Division I Men's Collegiate Tennis Rankings, which were announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Wednesday.
"Good fall for our team," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "Love to see the Wolfpack up high in the ITA National Fall rankings. We are looking forward to the dual match season!"
After a record-setting fall season, during which he defeated three opponents ranked in the top 125, Galarneau jumped up 27 spots in the singles rankings to become the highest-ranked NC State men's tennis player in recorded ITA history, which dates back to 1981.
He joins an elite group of NC State men's tennis players who have seen success in the program, including many who put together historic careers before recorded ITA rankings. All-American John Sadri most notably reached the 1978 NCAA singles final during his final season of collegiate play where he faced tennis great John McEnroe in the title match.
Galarneau's No. 16 ranking surpassed Jay Weinacker, an NCAA All-American and the current record-holder in career singles wins (106), and Jaime Pulgar, who were tied at the top of the recorded Wolfpack standings after earning No. 33 rankings in 2009 and 2012, respectively.
He also made program history earlier this fall when he became the first Wolfpack men's tennis player to advance to the quarterfinals at the ITA All-American Championships in October. He also competed at the ITA National Fall Championships in November.
NC State also has a ranked doubles pair in Galarneau and junior Michael Ogden, who sit at No. 32 in the latest poll. The duo picked up six doubles wins this fall, competing at the ITA All-American Championships, the ITA Carolina Regional, and the ITA National Fall Championships. Their best run came at the Regional, where Galarneau and Ogden won five consecutive matches to reach the doubles final.
