January 5, 2017
RALEIGH – The No. 29/23 NC State women's basketball team built up an early 23-9 lead over the No. 14/14 Miami Hurricanes but ultimately fell 67-64 Thursday evening on Kay Yow Court inside Reynolds Coliseum. The loss denied the Wolfpack's bid at a historic feat, as NC State was seeking to defeat three straight teams ranked in the top 25 in consecutive games for the first time in program history.
Jennifer Mathurin led the Wolfpack offense with 17 points on 6-13 shooting. She was joined in double figures by 16 points from Miah Spencer, 11 from Chelsea Nelson, and 10 from Dominique Wilson. Miami's Keyonna Hayes (18 points, 10 rebounds) led all players in both scoring and rebounding and was joined in double figures by teammate Adrienne Motley (16 points).
NC State (12-4, 2-1 ACC) built up a 23-9 lead early on hot shooting in the first quarter, but the Hurricanes (13-2, 2-1 ACC) would respond with a 23-3 run over the next eight minutes and 30 seconds to claim a 32-26 advantage with 2:41 remaining in the second quarter.
Trailing by four (36-32) at the halftime break, NC State would pull within two points on two occasions in the third quarter and would trail by as many as 11 in the fourth before mounting a furious comeback attempt. Down 61-50 with 6:18 remaining in the contest, NC State went on an 11-0 run and tied the game up at 62 apiece when Dominique Wilson scored on a drive with 1:43 remaining in the game. Miami would ultimately take the lead once and for all on a layup by Laura Cornelius with 1:17 left in the contest before holding on for the 67-64 win.

Quotes from the Wolfpack
Head coach Wes Moore's opening statement: "I'm proud of our kids. When we dug a bit of a hole they came and fought back but just couldn't quite get over the hump. Rebounding was a big factor. Giving up 16 offensive rebounds is a pretty tough mountain to overcome as far as giving them (Miami) that many more possessions. We missed some free throws too. I could have done some things too to help give us some better looks, possibly. You have to give Miami a lot of credit - they have some great players and knocked down some big shots.
"Keyona Hayes was just a monster out there with a double-double and getting it done on the boards for them. It's tough losing at home, but we have a quick turnaround and have to bounce back to go over to Wake on Sunday. We don't have a lot of time to rest or reflect too much. We'll watch film, walk through some things and clean some stuff up to be ready to go."
Ashley Williams on the team's confidence after a 2-0 start in ACC play and heading into the game against Miami: "We were confident but Miami is a really good basketball team. The last couple of years they've beaten us and this year we knew we were getting a top ACC team. The last two games gave us a lot of confidence but we were aware we weren't playing a team that was going to let up."
NC State returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 8 at local rival Wake Forest. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. from Winston-Salem, N.C. The game will be televised live on the ACC's Regional Sports Networks. Full listings can be found here.
