#STATEMENT! Wolfpack Wins at No. 17 Duke
The win was NC State's first at Cameron Indoor Stadium since Jan. 18, 1995 when the Pack defeated Duke, 77-60. The win was also head coach Mark Gottfried's 400th career victory.
The Pack was down nine points, 68-59, with 6:52 to play after a Luke Kennard steal and lay-up. NC State responded with a 20-5 run over the 5:25 to take its biggest lead of the game, six points, at 79-73 on a Dennis Smith lay-up with 1:27 to go.
Ted Kapita got the comeback rolling with four consecutive points to cut Duke's lead to five, 68-63, and Dennis Smith, Jr., took over from there as he either scored or assisted on NC State's next 16 points.
Smith sealed the win with a steal with under two seconds remaining.
Smith scored a career-high 32 points on 10-of-18 shooting and also led the Pack with six assists and two steals. All six assists were in the second half as the Pack shot 55.2 percent from the floor in overcoming a six-point halftime deficit.
Smith scored the final six points of the first half to help get NC State in striking distance as Duke had its biggest lead of the game at 12 points after a Kennard free throw before Smith cut the lead in half with a flourish.
After not playing in the last two games, Ted Kapita was the first player off-the-bench for NC State Monday night and the freshman delivered his first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in 19 minutes. Kapita was 6-of-7 from the floor and had three of NC State's seven offensive rebounds in the game.
Abdul-Malik Abu finished one rebound short of a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds. Abu was 8-of-12 from the field.
Abu, Kapita and Smith combined to make 24 of NC State's 29 field goals in the game.
The Pack returns to action Sunday afternoon when it plays at #13/14 Louisville. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 1 p.m. and will be televised on the ACC Network.
