RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State track and field team is set to begin its 2017 portion of the season Friday at the Dick Taylor Carolina Cup in Chapel Hill, N.C., at the Eddie Smith Field House. The meet will provide eight student-athletes their first chance to suit up for the Wolfpack and give the team a chance to compete against in-state schools North Carolina (host), Duke and ECU.
Â
First Meet of the Year:
The meet will serve as the beginning of the track season for the sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers. The Pack also made a team debut at the meet last year, earning 11 ACC qualifying marks in the first action of the year for most of the team.
Â
All-Americans in Action:
Four returning All-Americans will compete Friday. Joshua Davis is preparing for his third meet of the season and will aim to defend his fifth-place national mark in the weight throw. The Pelham, N.C., native earned his first All-America honor at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships and set the school record in the weight throw.
Â
Tiana Patillo will look to lead the long sprints group as a 2015 DMR All-American. Patillo ran the 400 leg of the school-record-setting DMR team at the 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships. She is set for the 400m and 200m dash. The junior currently ranks top-five in school history in the both indoor events.
Â
Both Quashawn Cunningham and Shannon Patterson will return to the track for the 60m and 200m dashes. The duo ran legs of the Wolfpack's first 4x100 All-American team since 1991 and hold top-10 times in school history in the 60m and 200m indoor dashes.
Â
Early Success:
NC State is already off to a hot start this season, with five marks currently ranked in the top-16 of the national standings. Davis holds the fifth-best distance in the weight throw of 67'8.00" that was set during his season opener at the Holiday Invite.
Â
Erika Kemp led herself and three other Wolfpackers to current national marks in the 5,000m early this season at the BU Season Opener. Kemp is fifth in the NCAA with a mark of 15:56.52, while Rachel Koon (8th, 16:04.01), Ryen Frazier (12th, 16:27.74) and Alyssa Rudawsky (13th 16:36.66) are all in the national lists. The group set three of the 15 fastest indoor 5,000m times in school history at the meet.
