RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State women's soccer team enters the midway point of the season with a 6-2-0 record, five straight wins, three consecutive shut outs and most importantly - confidence.
The five match winning streak is tied for the nation's 11th longest winning streak and the Wolfpack climbed to No. 23 in HeroSport's BennettRank.
The goals have flooded in for the young Pack, as the team has totaled 22 goals already this season. The number ranks seventh in the NCAA and the team's deadly attacking unit has posted a 2.75 goals per match rating, which is rated 14th in the NCAA.
"We wanted to be in a good spot in wins and confidence going into ACC play and we have that," said head coach Tim Santoro. "I think the team is anxious to play on Friday."
"We went down and played South Carolina, who I believe is easily a top-10 team this year. They're very good, so we've played in a tough environment against a top team already this year. With North Carolina, everyone knows their history. For us, it's just ACC game No. 1. We're not really paying too much attention to label on the team. We are preparing for them, but its more about us and what we can do on Friday."
The Pack attack is fueled by the entire team with 12 players recording either a goal or assist. However, it's the freshman class whose energy has ignited a spark in the Wolfpack's game.
Five freshmen have started in all eight non-conference matches, including one defender, two midfielders and two attackers. Ten freshmen have earned playing time, and seven have recorded either a goal or an assist. Additionally, Paige Griffiths, who helps command the middle of the pitch, for the Pack has played the full 90 minutes in the last four matches and currently leads the team with 707 minutes played.
The highly-ranked incoming class was always going to play, but the mentality of the youth movement in Raleigh has spurred the change in the team's style of play.
"The talent we brought in this year is awesome," said goalkeeper Sydney Wootten. "We have a lot of skilled players and that has definitely shown with all the goals we've scored from our freshmen class. I admire the work ethic they all brought in. These players are used to winning, so bringing that winning mentality back to the Pack is important and is definitely showing in our results."
During the non-conference slate, the Wolfpack attack has outshot opponents 130-62 and outscored them 22-8. The attack-minded approach won't change heading into ACC play.
NC State begins conference play Friday, as it travels to No. 7 North Carolina for a 5 p.m. showdown against the Tar Heels. The Pack's schedule doesn't get any easier, as seven of its final nine opponents are either currently ranked or receiving votes in the NSCAA National Poll.
Friday night's match will be broadcast on the ACC Digital Network Extra. Fans can also follow along through live stats, Twitter and Instagram.
