Recently, GoPack.com had the opportunity to catch up with former women's golf member Caroline Ellington about what she has been up to since she graduated from NC State.
A New Bern, N.C., native, Ellington graduated in 2013 with a degree in textile engineering with a concentration in product development and in 2014 with a master's degree textile engineering. Since graduating from NC State she has been working in Raleigh as a sales assistant at Peter Millar.
Her career path since graduating in 2014:
"I was fortunate enough to land a job just weeks after finishing up my final year of eligibility and grad school with Peter Millar, right here in Raleigh. Peter Millar is a luxury apparel brand with roots in golf apparel.
"I started off working in product compliance and quality control, and this past spring I got an opportunity to move into outside golf sales support. I now work as sales assistant and sub-rep to our outside sales representative who covers the Southeast Atlantic region (mainly the Carolinas and Georgia). I've been with Peter Millar just over two years."
What her job entails on a day-to-day basis:
"My main responsibilities include servicing accounts in our territory as well as handling any tournaments and special events business. I have the opportunity to travel regularly to any of our golf accounts to sell product or to be on-site for special events."
Her favorite thing about her job:
"I truly enjoy a lot of things about my job, but my favorite aspect is simply getting to deal with golf every day. I love golf, and have found through the years that it can be used as a wonderful tool to connect good people. I thoroughly enjoy working closely with our golf customers and although I'm on the sales side of things now, I'm still able to use my technical knowledge to communicate the value of our product to the customer."
How her job helps to stay in tune with and give back to the game of golf:
"I would almost say that my job requires me to stay in tune with the game. Staying relevant with things happening in golf fashion and on the competitive golf scene is something I feel is essential to me doing my job well. I would also say that my job enables me to give back to the game- whether it's involvement with The First Tee or encouraging other charitable donations from Peter Millar back to the community. I'm proud of the positive impacts that we have here."
How often she plays golf:
"As much as I can!! Some times once a week, sometimes more, sometimes much less. I'm happy to get out there whenever I can."
What she misses about collegiate golf and NC State:
"Almost everything! I mostly miss the opportunity to compete with other high-performing players, but I'm doing what I can to stay competitive by playing in local amateur tournaments and trying to qualify for some national events.
"I also miss all of the 'class-A' facilities we had access to as members of the golf team. We were very fortunate to have such great support facilities and staff that enabled us to train, practice, study and play at the top level. I'm really glad I still live in Raleigh so that I don't have to really miss NC State-I stay involved with young alumni events and have season football tickets again this year."
How NC State prepared her for life after college:
"In my opinion, the preparation that NC State gave me for post-college "real world" life has been fantastic. I believe I had a very well rounded education and that playing golf was a fundamental part of that.
"One of the best gifts I gained from playing golf and attending NC State is the time management, organization and prioritization skills that I had to have in order to balance golf, studies and other extra-curricular activities successfully. I also feel that being challenged to train and play to my highest ability further enforced my strong work ethic. I'm very thankful for my time at NC State and on the team with Coach Marsh."
