EUGENE, Ore. – Ryan Hill finished sixth in the 5,000m final on Saturday night, crossing the finish line in 13:38.36. Hill ran in crowded field of distance stars and was just three spots from Team USA.
He opened the race near the back of the pack. Runners broke away and were overtaken by the chase pack on two different occasions.
With about four laps to go, Hill positioned himself well, moving just off the shoulder of the chase pack. Hill and the chase pack moved into the lead on the final lap. During a furious kick to the finish line, the Hickory, N.C., native remained in sixth, crossing the finish line just three seconds behind the third-place finisher.
