NC State baseball tied its postseason single-game scoring record
The Wolfpack (37-21) scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings to build a 10-0 advantage, making it 11-0 in the sixth. The Pack produced a six-run seventh to extend the margin. Navy (43-16-1) scored in the eighth to set the final 17-1.
Johnny Piedmonte (1-3) pitched a career-long 8 2/3 innings, tying a career-high with seven strikeouts. Making his first start since April 19, Piedmonte allowed one earned on six hits and a walk, and played a crucial role in preserving the Wolfpack bullpen ahead of Monday's final. Piedmonte retired 17 of 18 between the second and the seventh, working four 1-2-3 innings. Christian Demby relieved him in the ninth, recording the final out on four pitches.
Ten different Wolfpack batters recorded hits to produce 17 runs, good for a share of the program's postseason record, set in a 17-5 win over UNCW during the 2012 Raleigh Regional. Chance Shepard finished with a career-high five RBIs in a 3-for-4 outing with three runs, a walk, and his 15th homer of the year, second of the weekend.
Joe Dunand tied a career-high with four hits including his fourth homer and 18th double of the season, scoring twice and driving in a pair during a 4-for-6 performance. Andrew Knizner homered for the second time this weekend and sixth this season in a 2-for-3 day with two runs and two RBIs. Brett Kinneman scored three times in a 3-for-4 showing with a run, a walk, and his 12th double of the year.
Shane Shepard, Ryne Willard, and Jack Conley each provided pinch-hits. Conley drove in a run and scored once. Willard doubled for the third time, scoring once. Shane Shepard provided an RBI double to score older brother Chance.
NC State returns to action Monday at 1 PM against Coastal Carolina in a win-or-go-home scenario for the Pack. If NC State forces a second game, first pitch is scheduled for 6 PM.
