NC State Softball Splits Doubleheader with Georgia Tech

Maggie Hawkins and Lana Van Dyken recognized on senior day
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon with Georgia Tech on senior day at Dail Stadium. The Wolfpack won the first game of the day, 7-5, but fell in game two of the twin bill, 7-3.
NC State moves to 22-30 and 5-15 in ACC play, while Georgia Tech improves to 21-30 and 6-13 in conference action.
The Wolfpack's two seniors, Maggie Hawkins and Lana Van Dyken, were recognized prior to the game for their accomplishments along with senior managers CJ Moose and Jeff Pegram.
The Rundown (Game One)
- NC State struck first in the contest following an RBI single by Cheyenne Balzer to score Molly Hutchison from third base to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead.
- Hanna Sommer gave the Pack a 2-0 advantage in the third inning with a solo home run to deep left field, her seventh of the season.
- Georgia Tech countered in the top of the fourth with four runs to grab a 4-2 lead, but NC State answered in the bottom of the frame.
- The Wolfpack plated five runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-4 advantage after an RBI double by Alyssa Compton and a grand slam by Hutchison.
- Stepping to the plate with the bases loaded, the junior sent the first pitch of her at-bat over the center field fence for her 10th homer.
- The Yellow Jackets looked to mount a comeback in the seventh, but could only score one run as Harli Hubbard nailed down her fourth save of the season.

- Compton led the Wolfpack at the plate with a perfect 2-for-2 performance with a pair of doubles, while Balzer was also 2-for-2 with a couple singles.

-Courtney Mirabella started in the circle for the Pack and pitched four innings to earn her 13th win of the year. She allowed four runs and struck out three batters.

- Both team's bats were quiet early in game two, but Georgia Tech hit a pair of solo home runs in the fourth inning to ignite its offense.
- Leading 2-0 heading to the fifth inning, the Yellow Jackets tacked on three runs in the frame and added two more runs in the sixth.
- NC State tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh, as Meredith Burroughs hit a three-run homer in the frame to pull the Wolfpack to 7-3.
- She smacked the first pitch from Georgia Tech pitcher Jenna Goodrich over the right field fence for her 13th round-tripper.
On Deck
NC State and Georgia Tech will return to the field Sunday at noon for game three of the series, as the winner will clinch the series. It will be the Wolfpack's final home game of the season.
