No. 17 Wolfpack Takes Series at No. 14 Virginia

NC State baseball won 5-2 at Virginia on Sunday to capture the series
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - No. 17 NC State baseball knocked off No. 14 Virginia 5-2 on Sunday at Davenport Field to win the series.
The Wolfpack (19-9, 5-5 ACC) scored one in the first after Stephen Pitarra lead off his fourth game in a row with a walk. Andrew Knizner's RBI single to right gave the Pack its initial lead. NC State added two more in the second before Virginia (18-11, 6-6 ACC) began chopping away at the deficit with one in the second and third. The Pack added one in the fourth and sixth to set the final 5-2.
Ryan Williamson (5-0) earned the win by tying his career high of 10 strikeouts and a season long six innings pitched. Williamson battled through 127 pitches, allowing two earned on three hits and five walks. Will Gilbert collected his third save over three innings, scattering three hits, punching out three, and walking none.
Eight different Wolfpack batters contributed hits. Pitarra, Josh McLain, Preston Palmeiro, and Evan Mendoza had two each. Pitarra scored the game's first run and drove in one. Mendoza scored twice. McLain drove in a pair.
Neither side recorded an extra-base hit. Brock Deatherage provided an RBI and reached base in his 23rd-consecutive game. Brett Kinneman and Chance Shepard each scored once with a single.
With the win, Elliott Avent improves to 43-26 in his career against Virginia, 14-16 in Charlottesville, 24-17 versus Brian O'Connor, and 8-10 against O'Connor in Charlottesville. The Pack won its first series in Charlottesville since 2007.
