Meredith Burroughs tallies game-winning hit
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team split a pair of one-run games Saturday evening against Pittsburgh at Dail Stadium. The Wolfpack earned a 6-5 walkoff win in game one of the doubleheader, but the squad was edged in game two, 2-1.
NC State moves to 17-19 and 3-5 in ACC play, while Pitt is 22-12 and 4-7 in conference action.
The Rundown (Game One)
- Sophomore Meredith Burroughs lined an RBI-single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh to lift NC State to a 6-5 walkoff win against Pittsburgh.
- Pitt struck first in the contest with a run in the top of the first, but NC State responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to lead 2-1 at the end of the inning.
- Maggie Hawkins hit a single to center field to score Molly Hutchison from second base and Hannah Yeager followed with a single up the middle to plate Meredith Burroughs.
- The Panthers scored a run in top of the second to knot the score at two apiece.
- In the third inning, the teams traded solo home runs as Jenna Modic homered in the top of the frame for Pitt and Molly Hutchison answered with her sixth homer in the bottom of the inning.
- NC State took a 5-3 lead in the fifth after an RBI-single by Hutchison and an RBI-double by Burroughs.
- Pittsburgh responded in the sixth with a pair of runs to tie the score, after a sacrifice fly by Giorgiana Zeremenko and Modic's second home run of the contest.
- Fortunately for the Wolfpack, Tyler Ross and Hutchison drew consecutive walks to start the seventh and Ross raced around from second base to score on Burroughs' hit.
Quick Hits
- Burroughs led the Wolfpack at the plate with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, highlighted by two RBI and a run scored.
- Hutchison was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and also drove in two runs.
- Hawkins, Ross and Yeager each had one hit.
In the Circle
- Courtney Mirabella went the distance in the circle for NC State to earn her 11th win of the season.
- She struck out six batters and allowed four earned runs to secure the victory in her 12 complete game of the year.
The Rundown (Game Two)
- A pitcher's duel ensued in game two of the twin bill, as Wolfpack starter Brittany Nimmo and Panthers starter Modic went head-to-head.
- NC State broke the scoreless tie in the third, after Burroughs was walked with the bases loaded. Unfortunately, a groundout followed to end the threat for the Pack.
- The Wolfpack threatened in the fourth inning when Hawkins singled to start the frame and Yeager followed with a double to left center.
- Pittsburgh made a call to the bullpen after the two hits and Kayla Harris came in the game and retired the next three NC State batters to avoid any damage.
- Erin Hershman put a good swing on a ball in the sixth after a single earlier in the frame, as it carried over the left field fence for a two-run homer to give Pitt a 2-1 lead.
- NC State put runners at first and second with nobody out in the sixth, but a swinging strikeout and a double play followed to end the rally.
Quick Hits
- Hawkins and Yeager each turned in 2-for-3 outings, while Cheyenne Balzer and Lana Van Dyken had one hit apiece.
- Both teams recorded six hits in the contest, but Hershman's home run proved to be the difference.
In the Circle
- Nimmo pitched a great game in her return from injury, as she had not pitched since March 19.
- She allowed just two earned runs, both of which came on the same swing, and struck out three batters.
- The freshman also hurled her first complete game of her young NC State career.
