RALEIGH, N.C. – In a game where offense was at a minimum, it was Pittsburgh that made the most of its opportunities to claim a 3-0 victory against NC State Sunday afternoon at Dail Stadium to clinch the series.
Â
The Wolfpack falls to 17-20 and 3-6 in ACC play, while the Panthers improve to 23-12 and 5-7 in conference action.
Â
The Rundown
- Pittsburgh opened the scoring with three runs in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead, which would prove to be all the squad needed to earn the win.
- A well-executed squeeze play plated the first run of the inning, as Kathryn Duran dropped a great bunt to score Olivia Gray from third base.
- Kaitlin Manuel followed with a sacrifice fly to left field, as Erin Hershman scored from third base to give the Panthers a 2-0 advantage.
- The third run of the inning was unearned, scored as the result of a passed ball, following an error earlier in the frame.
- NC State had its best scoring chance in the sixth, after Meredith Burroughs walked and Hanna Sommer singled to left field.
- A groundout followed to move the runners to second and third with two down, but another groundout ensued to end the threat.
Â
Quick Hits
- The teams combined to tally just seven hits in the game, as the Panthers had four and the Wolfpack had three.
- Hawkins, Nimmo and Sommer each had a hit for NC State, while Hershman had two hits for Pitt and Gray and Shelby Pickett had one hit apiece.
