GREENSBORO, N.C. - She birdied the first hole of the day and didn't look back. Freshman Naomi Ko carded a 1-under par 71 to lead the NC State women's golf team Friday at the ACC Women's Golf Championship at Sedgefield.
ROUND 1 RESULTS
Ko, tied for fourth place in the 60-player league tournament, birdied two holes on both the front and back nine en route to her best round of the season.
"I struck the ball really well today and I fell like I was able to drop a lot of putts," Ko said. "I did have a few 3-putts, but I tried to stay patient and finish what I started."
Clutch shots down the stretch for Rachael Taylor and India Clyburn landed those two in the top 20. Taylor birdied 18 - her only birdie of the day - and Clyburn made a clutch putt for par. Taylor and Clyburn found themselves tied for 18th in the field.
Virginia, last year's ACC champion, is off to an 11-shot lead after the first round. Four Cavalier players are currently in the top 12 of the field. Wake Forest and Duke are tied for second, just three shots ahead of the Wolfpack. Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest and Lauren Coughlin of Virginia each shot 6-under and currently sit atop the leaderboard.
The second round of the ACC Women's Golf Championship continues Saturday morning.
