NC State baseball won 6-1 Monday night on ESPNU to sweep the series
RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 12 NC State baseball swept Wake Forest with a 6-1 victory Monday night on ESPNU at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The Wolfpack (23-9, 8-5 ACC) cruised to a 2-0 lead in the first two innings on RBIs from Preston Palmeiro and Ryne Willard. In the fifth, Palmeiro supplied his second RBI to make it 3-0. Wake (19-15, 5-10) responded with one in the seventh, before NC State tacked on three for insurance in the bottom eighth to set the final 6-1.
Brock Deatherage reached base four times with a two-RBI double, a run, two bunt singles, his ninth stolen base of the year, and a walk. The sophomore had a 25-game reached base streak snapped Saturday. Palmeiro went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Josh McLain doubled for the 12th time this season and scored the Pack's first run in 2-for-5 outing.
Brett Kinneman scored twice with a double and a walk. Evan Mendoza contributed an RBI double to start the eighth-inning rally, scoring later. Chance Shepard and Andrew Knizner each provided singles.
Wolfpack starter Ryan Williamson (6-0) took a no-hitter into the seventh, leaving with one earned on four hits and five walks, fanning six. His 6 2/3 falls one out short of tying his career long.
Tommy DeJuneas worked the next 1 2/3 with one hit allowed, two walks, and two punchouts. Will Gilbert induced the game-ending double play on two pitches.
