Softball Wins First Game, Drops Second Game Against IUPUI

Hannah Yeager hits her first career grand slam

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team split a doubleheader with IUPUI Saturday afternoon at Dail Stadium, winning the first game, 11-8, but fell in the second matchup with the Jaguars, 8-4.

The Wolfpack moves to 15-13 on the year, while IUPUI improves to 9-15.

Quick Hits (Game One)
- NC State grabbed a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second by taking advantage of an IUPUI miscue to score four unearned runs.
- Lana Van Dyken reached on a fielding error with the bases loaded to plate the first run of the game and Tyler Ross followed with an RBI walk to make it 2-0.
- Molly Hutchison ripped a two RBI single up the middle, as NC State extended its lead to 4-0.
- IUPUI responded with four runs in the third and four runs in the fourth to grab an 8-4 advantage.
- Hutchison smacked a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to trim the IUPUI lead to 8-7. It was her fifth home run of the year and cleared the fence in left center.
- The Wolfpack rallied in the bottom of the sixth, as Hutchison walked to start the inning and Maggie Hawkins followed with a double to right center.
- Meredith Burroughs drew a walk to load the bases with one out in the inning.
- Hannah Yeager stepped to the plate next and clubbed her first career grand slam off the scoreboard in right field to give NC State an 11-8 lead.
- The Pack retired the Jaguars in order in the seventh to secure the win.

Inside the Box Score
- Hutchison paced the Wolfpack at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance, highlighted by season-high five RBI.
- Yeager was 2-for-4 with four RBI, while Burroughs turned in a 2-for-3 outing with two runs scored and Compton tallied a 2-for-4 day at the plate.

- Courtney Mirabella started in the circle for NC State and pitched the first three innings before being relieved by Harli Hubbard.
- Mirabella pitched 3.2 innings and Hubbard tossed 1.1.
- Brittany Nimmo threw the final two innings and picked up the win, allowing one hit in two innings pitched with two strikeouts.

- NC State endured a tough start to the second game of the day, as IUPUI plated five runs in the inning thanks to four walks issued by Wolfpack pitchers.
- The Jaguars added to their total in the second with two runs to extend the lead to 7-0.
- Hawkins doubled to left center to score the first run of the game for NC State, as Van Dyken walked and stole second base to score on the play.
- IUPUI answered with a run the following inning after a bases loaded walk to push the Jaguars advantage to 8-1.
- NC State plated its second run of the game after an RBI double off the bat of Burroughs to make it 8-2.
- The Wolfpack loaded the bases in the sixth, but a double play and a flyout ended the threat.
- After retiring IUPUI in the seventh, NC State looked to mount a comeback in the bottom of the frame.
- The Pack started the inning with three singles to cut the deficit to 8-3. Its fourth single in the frame trimmed the IUPUI lead to 8-4.
- NC State had the tying at the plate with one out, as the bases were loaded but a fielder's choice and a groundout followed to end the game.

- Burroughs turned in the first four-hit performance of the season for any Wolfpack batter, tallying two RBI. She also doubled twice in the contest, the first time an NC State hitter has recorded more than one double in a game.
- Hawkins, Hutchison and Ross were each 2-for-4 in the game, while Yeager had one hit.

In the Pitcher's Circle
- Due to some injuries in the pitching staff, NC State was forced to experiment with some new faces in the circle.
- Hawkins saw action on the mound for the first time in her Wolfpack career.
- Burroughs also pitched for the first time in her NC State career and delivered three strong innings of relief, allowing one hit and she struck out the first batter she faced.
