SATURDAY'S GAME TIME CHANGED TO 2 PM
RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 13 NC State baseball won 9-1 on Friday night at Doak Field at Dail Park behind Joe O'Donnell's complete game.
The Wolfpack (15-5, 2-2 ACC) cruised to a 1-0 lead in the first, adding one in the fifth and two more in the sixth on Josh McLain's third homer of the year. A five-run rally in the seventh pushed the lead to 9-0. One out shy of completing the shutout, a Notre Dame (7-9, 0-4) solo shot set the final 9-1.
O'Donnell's complete game marks the first for a Wolfpack pitcher since Carlos Rodon pulled the feat on April 25, 2014 against Georgia Tech. Rodon owns the last complete game shutout, against William & Mary on June 1, 2013.
O'Donnell (3-1) scattered four hits over nine innings, taking a no-hitter into the third. He retired nine of the first 11 faced, then 15 of 18 from the fourth to the ninth-inning homer. O'Donnell walked four and struck out four, going the distance on 121 pitches.
Seven Wolfpack batters contributed hits, led by Shane Shepard's 2-for-3 performance with a double, a run, an RBI, and a walk. Josh McLain made it 4-0 in the sixth with his two-run bomb to left, part of a 1-for-1 evening with two runs, two RBIs, and two walks. Stephen Pitarra walked three times on a night the Pack drew 10 free passes total.
Chance Shepard went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, a run, and a walk. Brock Deatherage led off and scored once with a triple and two RBIs. Andrew Knizner hit his third double of the season in a 1-for-3 day with a run and two walks. Preston Palmeiro scored once with a walk and a single. Evan Mendoza went 2-for-5. Garrett Suggs scored as a pinch runner in the seventh.
NC State returns to action at 2 PM on Saturday in a game originally scheduled for a night start, moved due to weather forecast. Streaming coverage will be provided by ESPN3. Radio duties will be handled by 88.1 WKNC. Fans can follow along with live stats on GoPack.com, or Twitter updates via @NCStateBaseball.
