BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The NC State track and field team had a monumental opening day at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, advancing one runner to the finals, earning one Second-Team All-America honor and four First-Team All-America honors.
Jonathan Addison led the way for the Pack with a national runner up finish in the long jump.
After the first day, the men's team sits in sixth place with 12 points and women's team is in a tie for 10th place with eighth points.
Weight Throw:
Joshua Davis opened the meet for the Pack and earned his first-ever All-America honor, finishing 16th in the weight throw with a mark of 62'5.00". Davis qualified on a medical scratch just days before the meet.
The Pelham, N.C., native fouled his first attempt, but heaved a 62'5" throw on his second attempt to clinch All-America honors. Additionally, Davis was the only underclassmen competing in the meet.
On the women's side, Nicole Chavis concluded her illustrious weight-throw career with her highest NCAA finish yet, taking fifth with a throw of 69'8.75". The Lumberton, N.C., native is now a three-time First-Team All-American in the event. She opened the event with a throw of 66'1.75" and improved on that mark her next two throws to finish with her best throw in the third frame of competition.
Chavis concludes the year with six top-five finishes, three wins, All-ACC and All-America honors. Her finish earned the women's team four points.
Long Jump:
Addison was just a jump away from missing the finals of the long jump, but a successful third jump of 25'3.25" after a pair of fouls kept Addison in the competition. In the finals, he saved his best jump for last, soaring 26'0.25" for second place. The jump marked the fourth time this season and the fifth time in his career that he jumped over 26'.
The second-place finish was the highest individual national finish for NC State since 2013. Addison's place earned eight team points for the Pack and marks his highest finish at NCAAs. He has now finished as a First-Team All-American in the last two NCAA Track and Field Championships.
The Raleigh, N.C. native concludes his indoor season as the national runner up, an ACC Champion and the USTFCCCA Southeast Field Athlete of the Year.
Mile:
Megan Moye advanced to the finals of the women's mile with an automatic-qualifying spot, finishing fourth overall and in her heat in 4:37.40. Moye ran most of the race near the back of the Pack, but closed down the lead group with a strong kick to close the race.
Moye ran the final 200m split in 32.25, which was the fastest final lap in her heat. During the last lap, Moye passed three runners, including two down the final straightaway.
Moye will race in the final of the mile Saturday at 4:10 p.m.
