
NC State Completes Historic Finish at NCAA Indoors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The NC State track and field teams concluded the 2016 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with the men finishing 14th and women taking 17th place.
The top-20 finishes are the highest finishes for each team since 1991.
Five out of the Pack's six athletes scored points for the team. The group was led by Jonathan Addison's second-place finish in the long jump. Nicole Chavis(WT), Erika Kemp(5k), Megan Moye(Mile) and Luis Vargas(3k & 5k) earned First-Team All-America honors with top-seven finishes in their respective events.
In addition to Addison's eight points with his runner-up finish, Luis Vargas added six points with four from the 5,000m race and two from the 3,000m race.
On the women's side, Kemp and Chavis both added five points for the Pack and Moye scored two points.
Mile
Megan Moye added another First-Team All-America honor for the Pack, as she took seventh overall in the mile with a time of 4:38.99. This is Moye's second career First-Team All-America honor. Last season, she ran a leg of the sixth-place DMR team.
The Moseley, Va., native opened the race at the back of the pack and stayed in that position until the final 400m. The junior kicked past several opponents to move into scoring position. After averaging a 35.74 split over her first six laps, she completed her final two laps in 32.56 and 31.98, respectively.
Moye concludes her indoor season with First-Team All-America honors, a silver medal at the ACC Championships and an additional All-ACC honor in the 3,000m. Moye also set the indoor mile school record during the regular season, breaking a 27-year old mark with a time of 4:37.04.
3,000m
Kemp closed out her indoor season with an 11th-place finish in the 3,000m race. Kemp crossed the finish line in 9:19.88, earning Second-Team All-America honors.
She concludes the indoor season as a First-Team All-American, Second-Team All-American, the 5k indoor school record holder, USTFCCCA's Southeast Women's Track Athlete of the Year and the 5k bronze medalist at the ACC Indoor Championships.
On the men's side, Vargas added two more points for the men's team and his earned his second First-Team All-America honor of the meet after placing seventh in the men's 3,000m race with a time of 8:02.43.
Vargas opened the race near the back of the group and closed down on the athletes ahead of him over the final 400m. Vargas had the fastest final lap of the race, completing the 200m distance in 27.85.
The fourth through eighth-place runners all crossed the finish line within .40 seconds of each other. Vargas and the sixth-place runner finished just .004 seconds apart.
In Vargas' first-ever indoor track season, he earned two First-Team All-America honors and All-ACC honors in the 5k. Vargas also set a school record in the DMR and earned top-3 marks in school history in the 3k and 5k races.
Both Kemp and Vargas ran in the 3k and 5k races at the NCAA Championships.
