RALEIGH – In front of a sellout crowd at the 11th annual Hoops 4 Hope game, the NC State women's basketball team (17-9, 8-5 ACC) narrowly lost to No. 22 Syracuse by a final score of 55-52. The Wolfpack led for 25:51 of the game's 40 minutes but was ultimately bested by a strong fourth quarter from the Orange (20-6, 10-3 ACC) which featured a 4-7 success rate from three-point range.
Hoops 4 Hope at NC State is a yearly event which inspired a national movement (Play 4Kay). Former NC State head coach Kay Yow began the tradition in 2006, when one of the Wolfpack's home games was dedicated towards raising awareness and money for the fight against women's cancers. Donations made towards this cause go directly to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
Sunday's game featured former Wolfpack legend Chasity Melvin as the Master of Ceremonies and current Executive Director of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund Stephanie Glance. A former Associate Head Coach at NC State under Yow, Glance and Melvin were joined on the court at halftime by dozens of cancer survivors in a moving tribute.

-The Wolfpack outscored Syracuse 28-12 in the paint.
-Sunday's game featured seven lead changes and four ties.
-Jennifer Mathurin achieved her seventh career double-double (10 points & 10 rebounds).
-Syracuse's Briana Day also recorded a double-double (14 & 12). Teammate Alexis Peterson led all scorers with 16 points.

"As I told our players, they fought their guts out all day long," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame press conference. "You look at the stat sheet and we only had 12 turnovers. I think that's by far the lowest forced turnovers Syracuse has had all year. We did a good job on the boards against a very athletic team and a team with some length inside.
"Again, we did a lot of things right and definitely gave it an unbelievable effort. I'm disappointed in myself; we didn't get a good look at the end (of the game) and that's on me. I've got to put them in a better position."
NC State forced six Syracuse turnovers en route to taking a 17-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. The teams slugged through a choppy second quarter of 11 combined fouls and four made baskets to get to the halftime break with the Wolfpack holding a 26-20 advantage.
Day came alive in the third quarter for the Orange, scoring 10 points on spotless 5-5 shooting from the field. She paced her squad to a 17-10 advantage in the quarter to give the Orange a 37-36 lead heading into the game's final 10 minutes.
With NC State up by two points (47-45) and 3:49 remaining on the clock, Spencer sank two free throws and upped the advantage to four. An eight-point run solely created by Peterson (two 3FGs, two FTs) gave the Orange a lead which it would not relinquish. Down two points with less than ten seconds on the game clock, the Wolfpack had two contested looks down low. Trailing 55-52 with 2.2 seconds left on the game clock, a contested Ashley Williams three-point attempt missed the target.
Up next for the Wolfpack is its second and final ACC open date. The Wolfpack will not play on Thursday, February 18, and will return to action at UNC-Chapel Hill on Sunday, February 21. The game is a part of ESPN's Play 4Kay Week and will be aired on ESPN2 at 1 p.m.
