CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The NC State women's basketball team (18-9, 9-5 ACC) completed a regular-season sweep of UNC-Chapel Hill Sunday afternoon for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, winning at Carmichael Arena by a final score of 80-66. The win comes three weeks after the Wolfpack defeated the Tar Heels 78-49 in Raleigh on January 31.
NC State battled back from a 17-point deficit (33-16) in the second quarter to earn the 14-point victory, representing the team's largest comeback of the season.
Miah Spencer led the Wolfpack with a rare points and assists double-double, scoring 25 points on 7-15 shooting and dishing out 10 assists to tie a career high. Teammate Jennifer Mathurin also recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Dominique Wilson joined her two teammates in double figures with 19 points.
Stephanie Watts led all scorers with 30 points on 7-16 shooting (6-13 from distance). She also led all players with 13 rebounds. Watts was joined in double figures by 13 points from both Jamie Cherry and Destinee Walker.
"I couldn't be prouder of this team," NC State head coach Wes Moore said during the postgame press conference. "To fall down the way we did, we knew North Carolina would come out and be the aggressor, and they came out firing threes up from everywhere. It would have been easy for our kids to just say, 'Hey, it's not our day.' I told them during the media timeout of the second period, I think we were down 15, 'Let's try to cut this thing to single digits.' Little did I know we would be the one ahead. I said let's cut it to single digits, didn't say who is leading.
"Couldn't be prouder of them; they showed a lot of heart out there. It was a big win for us as far as our résumé and that sort of thing. Carolina, they have a lot of young talented players out there. I know their quantity isn't the greatest but their quality is very good. So you have to tip your hat to them too, the way they came out."
