RALEIGH – Led by 26 points on 10-14 shooting from freshman guard Aislinn Konig and the Wolfpack's ninth-best defensive effort in program history, the NC State women's basketball team closed out home non-conference play with a dominating 83-33 victory over visiting North Carolina Central Wednesday evening on Kay Yow Court inside Reynolds Coliseum.
NC State (9-2) took control of the game early, sprinting out to a 27-4 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter thanks to 11-15 (.733) shooting from the field. Quotes from the Wolfpack
Head coach Wes Moore's opening statement: "Once again I'm proud of the way our seniors came out. It could have been a game where they weren't quite as focused and ready to go. They got us off to a big start with a lot of momentum early, which allowed us to play the younger players a lot of minutes and get them more experience as we head into ACC play. Chelsea Nelson had a double-double in 18 minutes, struggling in the first half from the field but finishing some shots in the second half. Ace, you could see how well she shoots the ball, obviously, and she has a bright future ahead of her. It was a businesslike approach and it was a good way for us to wrap things up before we go on the road."
Aislinn Konig on her hot shooting: "I think that our seniors and starters started us off very well and made it very difficult for the other team to keep up with us. They got tired and that really allowed me to push it. The fact that I have such great teammates around me that I can kick to really forces the defense not only to help but be ready to close out on people like Lucky (Rudd) and try and stop me in the paint and that opens it up for me. It's really the team that allows me to do that."
NC State closes non-conference play on the road, playing at Tulane on Dec. 17 and South Alabama on Dec. 19. The Wolfpack begins Atlantic Coast Conference play at home Dec. 29 against No. 2 Notre Dame.
