Wolfpack Signs Six in Early Signing Period

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State track and field program signed six athletes for the fall of 2017 during the early signing period. Isabel Carron, Michelle Cobb, Julia Zachgo and Isabel Zimmermann will join the women's program and J Johnson and Gabriel King will join the men's program after all six recently signed their NLIs.
The team added depth with two jumpers, a thrower and three distance athletes. The Pack recruited well inside and outside the state, signing four from North Carolina, one from New York and an international recruit from Ireland.
Isabel Carron
Carron is the first international athlete to join the Pack's 2016 recruiting class. Carron hails from Ireland and has competed with the Irish Junior National Team at the European Cross Country Championships since 2014. The distance runner competes on the club-level for Skerries A.C. and holds track PRs of 10:08.80 at 3,000m and 17:14.44 at 5,000m.
Michelle Cobb
Primarily a horizontal jumper, Cobb is the reigning NCHSAA 4A Outdoor State Champion in the triple jump. The Ashville, N.C., native advanced to the New Balance National Outdoor Championships and the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships in the triple jump over the summer. The jumper also advanced to the USATF Region 3 Championships and the NC USATF Junior Olympic Championships in the long jump. Cobb has PRs of 39'5.00" in the triple jump and 18'1.00" in the long jump. Cobb comes to the Pack from T.C. Roberson, marking the third consecutive year NC State has tapped into the Ashville pipeline for cross country and track and field talent.
Julia Zachgo
Zachgo will join the program as a middle-distance runner. The Clifton Park, N.Y., native has posted an impressive cross country resume with a Nike XC National appearance and three Nike XC New York Regional appearances. Zachgo also holds a career high finish of eighth at the NY Federation Championships and a cross country 5k PR of 17:44.0. On the track, Zachgo holds PRs of 2:15.73 at 800m, 4:33.35 at 1,500m and 10:03.75 at 3,000m. She is also a 4x800 national champion. She ran the second leg of the relay at the 2016 New Balance Outdoor Nationals for Shenendehowa TC.
Isabel Zimmermann
Zimmermann, a native of Pfafftown, N.C., is a standout in-state distance runner. Zimmerman had a breakthrough year in 2016, improving 97 places from her NCHSAA XC state meet in 2015 to take 3rd overall in 2016 with a 5k cross country PR of 18:04.46. She's also a two-time Foot Locker South Region qualifier. On the track, Zimmermann took third in the 3,200m and fourth in the 1,600m at the NCHSAA 4A State Championships. She set her 3,200m PR while running indoors with a time of 10:49.38 and holds a 1,600m PR of 5.00.69.
J Johnson
Johnson joins the Pack as a short sprints and horizontal jumps specialist. The Cary, N.C., native qualified for the New Balance National Outdoor Championships in the long jump and 100m in 2016. He also competed in the NC USATF Junior Olympics and the USATF Region 3 Championship this summer in the 100m and 200m. He's improved his 100m PR by 0.81 to 10.58 over the past year. He has PRs of 21.68 in the 200m and 22'9.00" in the long jump.
Gabriel King
King will join the Pack's throwing group next fall. The Mount Airy, N.C., native holds the 2016 NCHSAA 1A Outdoor State Champion titles in the discus and shot put. King has a shotput PR of 54'8.75" and hasn't finished lower than first place in the discus since 2014 with a PR of 156.1" in the event.
