Newton, Mass. – The NC State men's soccer team scored four goals and battled back from a deficit on three separate occasions Saturday evening, but ultimately fell 5-4 in overtime at No. 37 Boston College in the 2016 regular-season finale.
Tanner Roberts (2), Julius Duchscherer, and Lukas Zarges scored for the Wolfpack Saturday evening and NC State outshot the Eagles by a 16-8 margin, but goals from Trevor Davock (3), Callum Johnson, and an NC State own goal in overtime proved to be the narrow difference in the contest.
"I thought we showed great character in the second half tonight," NC State head coach Kelly Findley said. "We had some great performances all over the field and showed tremendous character. Jake Dykes in particular was a real leader for us out there tonight and he spurred the rest of the guys on to some great things. It hasn't been a great season and to show that character in the final game of the regular season was tremendous. I'm very pleased with the guys and proud of their attitude, effort, and focus."
The match got off to a very brisk start, as Boston College opened the scoring in the third minute on a goal from Trevor Davock. NC State wouldn't wait long to answer, as Duchscherer scored his ninth goal of the season in the 12th minute on an assist from Zarges to level the contest.
The Eagles would reclaim the lead in the 23rd minute and expand it in the 27th, on goals from Davock and Johnson, respectively.
NC State bounced back midway through the second half, as Roberts scored two quick goals in the 59th and 69th minutes to pull the match even at 3-3. His first goal of the evening was assisted by Caleb Duvernay and his second was assisted by Duchscherer from a corner.
"We always talk about Tanner's work rate, commitment, and competitiveness," Findley added. "His quality showed tonight. We are very pleased for him and I just look forward to him getting better and better."
Davock would score what appeared to be the decisive goal of the contest in the 70th minute, completing his hat trick to put the Eagles ahead 4-3.
NC State battled back, and following a sustained spell of offensive pressure, Zarges scored his third goal of the season in the 85th minute to send the match to overtime. Zarges was assisted by Simon Blotko and Clayton Sparks on the goal.
BC found the winner in the 95th minute when a fortuitous bounce off an NC State player found its way into the back of the net to decide the match in favor of the Eagles.
NC State begins postseason play in the ACC Tournament at No. 17/7 Virginia on Wednesday, Nov. 2. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Charlottesville, Va.
