WILMINGTON, N.C. – The NC State men's soccer team picked up a big road victory Wednesday evening, winning 2-0 at No. 26/21 UNCW. Julius Duchscherer and Clayton Sparks scored for the Wolfpack as goalkeeper Alex McCauley and the team recorded a second consecutive shutout victory.
Duchscherer opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with a highlight reel backheel goal past goalkeeper Ryan Cretens. The goal was his team-leading eighth of the season and the 13th of his career. Stephen Elias and Simon Blotko assisted on the goal.
NC State weathered a strong push by UNCW to equalize in the second half, holding firm in the middle stages of the second stanza to preserve the 1-0 lead. The Wolfpack would earn some further breathing room in the 85th minute when Sparks scored his third goal of the season following a nice through ball from Jan-Luca Ahillen. Sparks took the ball in stride, beat one defender and then hit a shot over Cretens and inside the far post.
NC State returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 23 for its final home match of the regular season. The Wolfpack will host No. 13 Louisville at Dail Soccer Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra and will be followed by a free youth soccer clinic.
