RALEIGH – The NC State men's soccer team saw its two-match shutout victory streak come to an end during the 2016 home finale Sunday afternoon, falling 3-0 to visiting No. 13/7 Louisville.
The Wolfpack held Louisville's high-powered offense scoreless in the first half and managed a 5-5 tie in total shots during the first 45 minutes. Louisville took advantage of its three best chances in the second half, scoring goals in the 52nd, 61st, and 90th minutes to earn the win.
Fast Facts
-Senior GK Alex McCauley's shutout streak ended at 231 minutes when Mohamed Thiaw scored his 11th goal of the season in the 52nd minute to make it 1-0 in favor of Louisville.
-Louisville outshot NC State 8-2 in the second half.
-NC State was judged to have committed 20 fouls to Louisville's nine (12-3 in the first half).
-Seven different Wolfpack players recorded shots throughout the match.
NC State nearly broke the early deadlock in the 17th minute when Simon Blotko sent a hard shot just wide of the far post. The defender received a nice pass from teammate Travis Wannemuehler and sent his shot of 16 yards just inches beyond the far post.
Shortly after the halftime break, Louisville quickly scored two goals in a span of 10 minutes. Thiaw's 11th goal of the season in the 52nd minute came on a header to the far post following strong buildup play by teammates Geoffrey Dee and Tim Kubel, both of whom would later score in the match themselves.
Dee doubled the Louisville lead on an unassisted goal following a Wolfpack defensive turnover and Kubel made it 3-0 in the 90th minute when his shot attempt—already heading towards the target but likely within the reach of McCauley—took a deflection off a Wolfpack defender and beat the senior goalkeeper.
NC State closes the 2016 regular season at No. 35/18 Boston College on Saturday, Oct. 29. The Wolfpack will then begin ACC Tournament play on the road on Wednesday, Nov. 2.
