RALEIGH – The NC State men's soccer team dropped an overtime affair with visiting High Point Tuesday night, falling 4-3 to the Panthers. The Wolfpack battled back from a late 3-2 deficit to force the match to overtime, but would ultimately fall when High Point took advantage of a scoring opportunity in the 95th minute.
"We showed great resilience to get that goal," NC State head coach Kelly Findley said. "Overtime is a cruel animal, though. It's great to win in overtime but it feels terrible to lose."
Sophomore midfielder Julius Duchscherer and senior forward Travis Wannemuehler both recorded a goal and an assist in the contest. Duchscherer's goal was his team-leading fifth of the season and the 10th of his young career. The native of Hadamar, Germany, led all field players with seven total shots.
Wolfpack goalkeeper Jonathan "Boo" Davis made his first career start Tuesday evening and recorded two saves.
NC State took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when Duchscherer converted from the penalty spot shortly after teammate Tanner Roberts was fouled in the penalty area. The Panthers (7-3-2) answered in the 28th minute, leveling the match after Siggi Benonysson scored his sixth goal of the season following a long pass from teammate Ryan Inman.
The Wolfpack took its second lead of the match in the 71st minute when Lukas Zarges scored his second goal of the season. Wannemuehler threw the ball in to Jan-Luca Ahillen, who crossed it across the penalty area to a sliding Zarges. The senior struck a shot off the post and in to put the Pack back in front.
High Point scored two quick goals in the 80th and 86th minutes to seemingly put the match out of reach, but the Wolfpack had other ideas. Wannemuehler scored his first goal of the season in the 89th minute to level the match and send it to overtime. Roberts and Duchscherer assisted on the NC State goal with just 93 seconds remaining in regulation.
The Panthers scored on the first opportunity for either side in the overtime period when Jon Bolanos found the back of the net for the second time in the 95th minute.
"As a team, we continue to fight hard," starting midfielder Nick Retzlaff said. "I love the guys on the team and I think we fight for each other every night. Right now we're just maybe not winning a couple of the key moments (in matches) and if we get that right, we can start to turn this thing around."
NC State returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 15 when Pittsburgh comes to town. Saturday's match will serve as both NC State's annual Senior Day and also the 2016 Play4Kay Pink Game to raise awareness and money in the fight against women's cancers.
