RALEIGH - The NC State women's tennis team began its Saturday doubleheader earning a quality 4-3 victory over No. 42 William & Mary. The Wolfpack handed the Tribe its second loss of the season and its first loss to an unranked opponent. The Pack is now 1-0 against ranked opponents and 3-0 overall after beating VCU in the nightcap
In the eleventh hour of play Amanda Rebol entered the final set that would decide the Wolfpack's fate in the duel. This was Rebol's second deciding match of the day, presented with a similar situation in the first leg of the doubleheader. With the overall duel score at 3-3, Rebol split sets with Janina Braun of VCU 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 and edged a 7-5 lead in the final set. Rebol captured the match and secured the Pack's second 4-3 duel win and a doubleheader sweep.
When asked what was going through her mind in the final moments of her dramatic win Rebol simply responded, "Thank you Coach Sam Craven, those 6 a.m. workouts were worth it."
However, the excitement of the latter does not cast a shadow over the impressive statistics of the day's former win. NC State's victory over William & Mary was its first defeat of a Top-50 opponent in three years, following its 6-1 win over No. 47 Long Beach State during the 2013 season.
The Wolfpack led at the conclusion of doubles play and singles matches one through four, with an overall score of 3-2 requiring at least one win from Claudia Wiktorin or Rebol in singles five and six. Both matches split sets and headed into third set territory. Cecily Wuenscher of William & Mary retired early in the third set due to injury which secured NC State's victory against its first ranked opponent of the season in the early dual of Saturday's doubleheader.
In addition to the default win, three Pack players earned singles wins over the Tribe. No. 35 Martina Frantova finished victorious in a match against No. 91 Elizaveta Nemchinov, 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 6-4. After falling in the first set, Joanna Nalborska retaliated and collected a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Lauren Goodman.
Tayla Stenta continued to prove her worth for the Pack in its first match on Saturday, sweeping for the second time in as many matches this season. Stenta climbed from a deficit in the first set to take the tiebreaker and edge quickly out front in the second set, defeating Maria Groener 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.
NC State made changes to its doubles lineup against the No. 42-ranked squad but ultimately dropped doubles play against William & Mary. Bianca Moldovan and Wiktorin fell 6-2 and Joanna Nalborska and Rebol fell 6-3, discontinuing play for Martina Frantova and Stenta as the duo was tied 5-5.
Doubles competition faired better for the squad against VCU as the Pack collected two wins to earn the point. Moldovan and Wiktorin dominated Magda Aubets and Anna Rasmussen, netting a 6-3 win while Nalborska and Rebol fought for the point and ultimately collected it with a 7-6 (7-5) defeat of Janina Braun and Sofia Segerfors.
The Pack grew tired as it entered its eighth hour of play, dropping the majority of the early singles matches. Moldovan prevailed and split sets 6-3, 4-6 before dominating 6-0 in the final set to earn the win over Darya Berezhnaya. Playing the No. 6 spot, fellow freshman Barbara Mancera captured her first collegiate singles win during regular season play with a 6-3, 6-3 sweep against Segerfors.
The Wolfpack returns to action February 12 in its first away match of the season at LSU followed by Louisiana-Lafayette February 13.
