RALEIGH – The NC State women's tennis team faces its first ranked opponent of the season Saturday, Jan. 30 in the first leg of a doubleheader dual. The Pack will host No. 42 William & Mary at 11 a.m. followed by a match against VCU scheduled for 5 p.m.
Â
OPENING DAY SUCCESS:
On Monday the Red and White opened the season in home dual against East Carolina after its original home opener was cancelled due to weather last Saturday. The Wolfpack dominated the Pirates 5-2, which included wins from four players making their regular-season debuts for the Pack.
Â
SCOUT REPORT:
William & Mary currently lists No. 42 in the national polls. The Tribe climbed four spots in the most recent rankings after collecting three wins in its first four match-ups, which includes wins over the No. 35 and No. 47 teams. In the last meeting between the Wolfpack and Tribe during the 2015 season, William & Mary defeated NC State 6-1 at Williamsburg, Va.
Â
VCU will open its 2016 season in Raleigh Saturday. In March the Pack collected a 4-3 victory over the Rams in one of its final duals before the start of its strict ACC slate to close the 2015 season.
Â
SIMON SAYS:
"First off, it was good to finally get the opening match out of the way this past Monday. We really needed that match to help prepare for Saturday and I was very grateful to East Carolina for being so open to getting that done. I think the way it turnout out was a win-win for everyone, given the circumstances.
Â
"Looking ahead to Saturday, it's going to be a long day but we've known that since the schedule was finalized. It will help us answer a lot of questions about our team and really examine how much desire and passion we have to push this program forward. William & Mary is off to a good start this season. It is a very well coached, disciplined team and one that has a proud tradition. I expect it to be very tough match and that's something we are going to have to match right from the first serve. To then follow it with a team like VCU might seem daunting but realistically we need to have an appetite for the challenges this provides. The main thing is that Saturday will take a complete team effort to put this together and find a way to navigate everything successfully. We've essentially been preparing for this since August, now it's time to let loose and go for it." – Simon Earnshaw, head coach
