BLACKSBURG, Va. – The NC State women's basketball team (14-6, 5-2 ACC) picked up its fifth ACC win of the season Thursday night, snapping Virginia Tech's 12-game home winning streak with a 72-61 victory at Cassell Coliseum.
Trailing 36-34 at the half, NC State outscored the Hokies 22-9 in the third quarter to take a 56-43 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes. The Wolfpack would allow Virginia Tech (14-4, 2-3 ACC) to come no closer than eight points (58-50 and 60-52) throughout the remainder of the contest.
Despite playing through flu-like symptoms, junior guard Dominique Wilson led all scorers with 25 points. She was joined in double figures by Miah Spencer (14 points, all in the second half) and freshman DD Rogers (10). The Wolfpack shot a solid 27-57 (.474) from the field, went 8-21 (.381) from distance, and a near-perfect 10-11 (.909) from the free-throw line. NC State also committed a season-low eight turnovers and out-rebounded the Hokies by a 30-26 count.
The Wolfpack's 72 points proved impressive, as Virginia Tech was leading the ACC heading into Thursday's game by allowing opponents to score a mere 47 points per game.
"Our players made plays and I couldn't be prouder of them," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame radio interview with broadcaster Patrick Kinas. "Obviously Sunday (vs. Louisville) was heartbreaking. We watched the film Tuesday morning, talked a little bit, and then decided to move on.
"That's not just any ACC win. We've won three in a row on the road. That is hard to do in this league. Add to it that Virginia Tech was undefeated at home this year, 12-0 coming into this game. Just an awesome performance."
Hannah Young led Virginia Tech offensively, scoring 14 points on 5-10 shooting. The Hokies shot 24-49 (.490) from the field, a mark which included a 5-14 (.357) success rate from three-point range.
The Wolfpack trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half but would end the second quarter on a 13-5 run to pull within two (36-34) at the halftime break. NC State reclaimed the lead once and for all just 3:53 into the third quarter, as back-to-back baskets by Carlee Schuhmacher and Spencer gave the Wolfpack a 42-39 lead.
NC State has an open date this weekend and returns to action at home on Wednesday, January 27 against Virginia. Tipoff between the Wolfpack and Cavaliers is set for 7:30 p.m. from Holliday Gymnasium. The game will be streamed live for free on GoPack.com.
