Wolfpack Wins Triple OT Thriller at Pittsburgh
1/10/2016 4:59:00 PM | Women's Basketball
PITTSBURGH – Showing significant mettle in the Steel City, the NC State women's basketball team (12-5, 3-1 ACC) picked up its third straight Atlantic Coast Conference win Sunday afternoon, defeating the Panthers in a frenzied triple-overtime game by a final score of 78-76.
NC State held a six-point lead (54-48) with 3:56 remaining in regulation, but Pittsburgh (8-8, 0-3 ACC) recorded a 7-1 run to force overtime. The Wolfpack fell behind in each of the three overtime periods, yet fought back to end each one tied (62-62 and 66-66) before outscoring the Panthers 12-10 in the final five-minute stanza.
Pittsburgh was up 71-69 in the final overtime period before a Dominique Wilson three-pointer with 65 seconds remaining put the Wolfpack in the ascendency once and for all. Miah Spencer increased NC State's lead to five points with a jumper and two free throws before the Panthers pulled within the final margin of 78-76.
Spencer led all scorers with 22 points in the 50th game of her career in which she scored 10 points or more. Dominique Wilson (21) and Carlee Schuhmacher (16) joined her in double figures. Jennifer Mathurin recorded a career-high 17 rebounds and added nine points, crossing the 500-point threshold in the win.
"I'm proud of the team," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame radio interview with broadcaster Patrick Kinas. "It wasn't always perfect and it wasn't always pretty, but they made some plays. It would have been really easy at some point after giving up those late buckets at the end of each period to hang their heads and say 'it's just not meant to be.'
"Some of these athletes played 50-something minutes and I'm very proud of the way they hung in there. It sure makes the trip home and the next day or two a lot nicer."
