Last Time Out
NC State made a #STATEment on the opening weekend of play by compiling a perfect 3-0 record to win the Gamecock Invitational. More impressively, the Wolfpack swept all three matches, including the host Gamecocks in front of a crowd of nearly 1,500.
Brown The MVP
After coming on strong down the stretch last season, sophomore Julia Brown has taken on a much larger role in 2015. The Davidson, N.C., native was named the most valuable player (MVP) of the Gamecock Invitational after leading the team with 28 kills on the weekend.
Brown has more attempts than other player on the squad at this point in the season and has really embraced her role as a go-to player. She led the team with 10 kills against North Carolina Central, nine kills versus Southeastern Louisiana and was second on the team in kills with nine against South Carolina.
That SPEAKS Volumes
Junior setter Maggie Speaks had a great first weekend of the season, averaging 28.33 assists per match and 9.44 assists per set. She dished out 33 assists against South Carolina, 32 versus Southeastern Louisiana and 20 in the win over NC Central.
The Camden, S.C., native also chipped in defensively and offensively with 15 digs and 14 kills over the weekend. For her efforts, she was named to the Gamecock Invitational All-Tournament Team, the second such honor of her career.
Cormier's Crushing It
Two years removed from an ACL injury that forced her to miss the 2013 season, senior Morgan Cormier is back to her usual self and is making her presence felt in the lineup. Transitioning from the middle blocker position to the right side, the Carlsbad, Calif., native has made the move seamlessly and the results tell the story.
Cormier had 18 kills on opening weekend, highlighted by a match-high 11 in the Wolfpack's 3-0 win against South Carolina. She only had 19 swings in the contest, so she scored on more than half of her swings (11/19).
Bunn In Home Openers
Head coach Bryan Bunn has never lost a home opener in his tenure with the Wolfpack, recording a perfect 5-0 mark.
Scouting Ole Miss
The Ole Miss Rebels enter the weekend with a 4-1 record, following a 3-2 loss to Tennessee-Martin in its most recent outing of the season Tuesday night. Ole Miss compiled a perfect 3-0 record at its Magnolia Invitational, but split a pair of matches at home on Tuesday.
NC State and Ole Miss and have met twice in the history of the programs, with each team collecting one win. The Wolfpack won the last meeting in 2007, 3-0, in a match played on the Rebels home court.
Senior Nakeyta Clair leads the team offensively with 59 kills, an average of 3.11 kills per set, while freshman Kathryn Cather is second on the squad with 45 kills. At the setter position, junior Aubrey Eddie has recorded 216 assists or 11.37 per set. Defensively, junior Kristen Brashear has tallied 69 digs, an average of 3.63 per set.
Scouting Jacksonville
Jacksonville heads into the Hilton Garden Inn Cary Classic with a 2-1 record on the year, after competing in Auburn's War Eagle Invitational last weekend. The Dolphins earned wins against Samford and Stephen F. Austin, while suffering a 3-2 loss to Auburn.
NC State owns a 3-0 all-time record against Jacksonville, with the last meeting occurring in 2012, a 3-0 win for the Wolfpack in the season opener.
The Dolphins are led offensively by senior Emily Laskelle with 48 kills (3.43 kps), while the team's setter Jizzyan Gesualdo has passed out 122 assists (8.71 aps). As a team, Jacksonville has an attacking percentage of .178 while opponents are hitting .152.
Scouting Delaware
The Delaware Blue Hens are 1-2 on the year, after opening the season at the UCF Invitational. The Blue Hens suffered 3-2 losses against Southern Illinois and Northern Colorado, but defeated UCF by the same score.
NC State and Delaware have met three times on the court, with the Pack emerging victorious in all three contests. The last meeting was in 1998, when the Wolfpack defeated the Blue Hens, 3-1.
Autumn Jenkins paces the team in kills with 59 on the year, an average of 3.93 kills per set. At the setter position, Julia Anderson has dished out 134 assists or 9.57 assists per set. As a team, Delaware has an attacking percentage of .212 while opponents have recorded a .228 clip.
