NC State Volleyball Drops Five-Set Thriller In Home Opener

RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State women's volleyball team could not hold off a late surge by the Ole Miss Rebels, as the Wolfpack dropped a hard-fought five-set match, 3-2 (25-22, 25-17, 25-22, 26-24, 15-7), Friday evening in Carmichael Gym.
The Wolfpack moves to 3-1 while the Rebels improve to 5-1 on the season.
NC State will return to action Saturday at 12 p.m. inside Carmichael Gym as the team takes on Jacksonville in its second match of the tournament followed by Delaware later in the day at 7 p.m.
Match Notes
-Tonight's match marked the Pack's first home contest of the season and its third meeting with Ole Miss in program history, as the Rebels took a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series.
- It was NC State's first loss in a home opener under head coach Bryan Bunn. The sixth-year coach is now 5-1 in home openers.
Match Rewind
-NC State narrowly dropped its first set against the Rebels, 25-22, as the Pack's deficit never extended to more than five points. Senior Morgan Cormier recorded a kill on four of her six swings in the set.
-In the second and third sets, the Pack rallied back to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Pack won the second set, 25-17, followed by a 25-22 win in the third set.
-The Pack held the upper hand for most of the fourth set but narrowly fell 26-24 as NC State could not hold off Ole' Miss down the stretch.
-In the fifth and final set, the Pack fell 15-7.
Top Performers
-NC State had three players record double digit kills, as senior Morgan Cormier lead the team with a .389 attacking percentage, collecting 17 kills and three service aces on the evening. Sophomores Kaitlyn Kearney and Julia Brown joined Cormier in double-digit kills with 14 and 11, respectively.
-Kearney also recorded a match-high seven blocks.
-Junior Maggie Speaks tallied 47 assists on the night while recording a .417 hitting percentage and one service ace.
-Defensively, junior Rachel Eppley collected a match-high 19 digs.
