RALEIGH – The NC State athletic department mourns the passing of Faye Young Miller on September 23, 2015.
Â
A two-time letterwinner at NC State, Young played for Wolfpack legend Kay Yow and was co-captain of the third-ranked Wolfpack in 1977-78, helping to lead the team to a 29-5 overall record and a perfect 9-0 mark in ACC games. She was a member of the 1977 All-NCAIAW Tournament Team and was the team leader in free throw percentage during the 1976-77 season. Following her successful collegiate career at State (1976-78) and her graduation with a bachelor of arts degree in sociology, Faye played for three years in the Women's Professional Basketball League for the New York Stars.
Â
Faye and deceased twin sister Kaye played together at NC State and professionally. They were also famously featured in the following Dannon Yogurt commercial from 1980. Â
Â
After the conclusion of her professional basketball career, Faye was the head coach at Manhattan College for two seasons and then served as a women's basketball color commentator for ESPN from 1983-88. She then spent one season as an assistant coach at Fairview High School in Boulder, Colorado, before serving as an assistant coach at Georgia Tech for five seasons. Young then moved to the Northeast to coach at Ithaca High School, work as a varsity official, and work as a volunteer assistant at Cornell.
Â
On August 1, 2009, Young published a book titled Winning Basketball for Girls. She is survived by her husband Matthew, her son Samuel, and her daughter Chaney.Â
