NC State baseball suffered a heartbreaking 6-5 defeat at East Carolina on Tuesday night at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The Wolfpack (21-17) trailed through the game after ECU (25-16) took a 1-0 lead in the third. State battled to tie the game in the fifth and sixth. Each time, the Pirates added a single run to retake command. Trailing 4-2 in the eighth, the Wolfpack began its furious comeback.
Chance Shepard's second homer of the season, fifth career, granted NC State a 5-4 lead with one out in the ninth. Shane Shepard provided the leadoff single to make it a two-run jack, before leaving to pinch-runner Brock Deatherage.
A leadoff triple in the ECU 9th put the Wolfpack lead in jeopardy. An error on a sac fly to left put runners at first and second with nobody out. The game-winner came on an RBI single down the first base line into right, allowing the Pirates to walk off 6-5.
Logan Ratledge extended his hitting streak to 21 games, tied for third-longest all-time at NC State with Brian Wright and Ryan Mathews. Greg Briley's 26-game streak from 1986 represents the record. Tom Sergio's 25-game streak from 1995 sits second. Ratledge finished the night 4-for-5, his third career four-hit game and first this season, with a double and a run.
Preston Palmeiro homered for the fourth time this year, tying the game 2-2 in the sixth, part of a 2-for-5 outing with two RBIs and a run to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Ryne Willard went 2-for-3 with a walk. Shane Shepard went 2-for-4 with a run. Joe Dunand doubled with an RBI.
Wolfpack starter Curt Britt left after four innings of work, holding the Pirates to one earned on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Tommy DeJuneas was the first pitcher out of the pen, allowing two runs, one earned in an inning. Will Gilbert pitched three no-hit innings with an earned run and two punchouts. Joe O'Donnell (5-3) took the loss on two earned in the ninth.
NC State returns to action on Friday, April 24 at 6:30 PM on ESPN3, hosting Virginia. Radio duties for the weekend will be provided by 88.1 WKNC. Fans can also follow along with live stats from GoPack.com, or Twitter updates from @NCStateBaseball.
