RALEIGH, N.C. - Despite a strong push late in the doubles and singles matches, the No. 31 NC State men's tennis team dropped a conference decision to No. 12 Virginia, 7-0. The Pack moves to 10-5 (0-2 ACC) on the season.
Coaches Comments:
On match against Virginia:
"We had a chance to make the match interesting with the doubles point, but we got ahead of ourselves and ended up letting the point slip away. We were playing smart, solid doubles, and we started thinking about the matches on other courts. It was a good chance to put pressure on them. In singles, I think they did a good job coming out strong against us. We were really responsive on some of the courts, but not all of them." - Head Coach Jon Choboy
On upcoming Louisville match:
"We have spring break now, so we have some more opportunities to train. We will put in a really good week of preparation, and be ready to play on Friday." - Head Coach Jon Choboy
Match Recap:
The Pack put up a strong fight in doubles play and came within two tiebreakers of winning the point. After UVa's duo of No. 55 Ryan Shane and Luca Corinteli defeated No. 12 Ian Dempster and Robbie Mudge on court one, the Pack's second and third pair's sent their matches to tiebreakers.
Austin Powell and Simon Norenius jumped out to a 7-6 lead in the second spot, while Nick Horton and Thomas Weigel fought back from 5-6 to tie the match at seven. Both double's teams would come a few points short in their tiebreaker as Virginia picked up the doubles point.
In singles, Virginia came out with intensity as it took a lead on all six courts. However, Beck Bond, Norenius and Horton would fight back to tie each of their matches in the first set. Norenius would force his match into a first-set tiebreaker before being edged out, 7-4, while both Bond and Horton were also unable to close out their first set.
Bond would keep his match against No. 1 Thai-Son Kwiatkowski close in second set, but ultimately fall, 6-3, 6-4. Horton also stayed close, but a late rally from Alexander Ritschard ended the second set at 7-5.
Up Next:
NC State will be back in action Friday, March 13 at 4 p.m. for a conference match against Louisville. The Wolfpack won the last contest in 2013, 4-2.
