ATLANTA -- The NC State softball team split a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) games against Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon at Mewborn Field. The Yellow Jackets rallied for a 5-3 win in game one, but the Wolfpack countered with a 7-1 victory in game two.
State improves to 18-13 overall and 5-3 in ACC play, while Tech moves to 12-22 and 5-9 in league action.
Quick Hits (Game One)
- Sophomore Molly Hutchison ignited the Wolfpack offense in the top of the third with a three-run homer to right field to give NC State a 3-0 lead. It was her team-leading 11th home run of the season and scored freshman Alyssa Compton and senior Renada Davis.
- Compton ripped a double off the fence in right center field to start the inning, narrowly missing her first collegiate home run. Davis was walked to put runners at first and second base and two batters later Hutchison drove one out of the ballpark.
- Georgia Tech plated a run on its first hit of the game in the bottom of the third, as NC State starting pitcher Emily Weiman held the Yellow Jackets hitless through the first three innings.
- Tech's Courtney Ziese doubled to right center, which allowed Katie Johnsky to score from first base to trim the Wolfpack lead to 3-1.
- The Yellow Jackets rallied in the bottom of the sixth to score four runs and take a 5-3 lead. Kelsey Chisholm had the big hit in the inning with a bases-clearing double to left center, scoring three runs on the play.
Quick Hits (Game Two)
- The Wolfpack jumped on the Jackets starting pitcher Christina Biggerstaff early, scoring four runs in the first inning of the contest. Davis led off the game with a single and later scored on a wild pitch.
- Junior Maggie Hawkins doubled down the right field line to score Hutchison and sophomore Tyler Ross, as NC State took a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Morgan Medford ripped a single up the middle, which allowed Hawkins to score the fourth run of the frame.
- With the bases loaded in the second inning, Hutchison reached on an RBI-fielder's choice as Compton slid across home plate ahead of the throw to the catcher. Ross walked with the bases still loaded and freshman Meredith Burroughs hit a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Lana Van Dyken to score and make it 7-0 in favor of the Wolfpack.
- Georgia Tech scored its lone run of the contest in the bottom of the third on a solo home run by Kelsey Chisholm.
Inside the Box Score
- Hutchison led the Wolfpack at the plate in game one with a 2-for-4 performance, highlighted by a home run and three runs batted in (RBI). Compton had the other hit of the contest for the Pack, as NC State batters struggled against Tech's starting pitcher Kylie Kleinschmidt.
- In game two, Davis was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate to register the first four-hit outing of her collegiate career. Hawkins and Medford chipped in with one hit apiece.
In the Pitcher's Circle
 - Weiman started in the pitching circle for State in game one and had a good outing, but ran into trouble in the sixth inning when Georgia Tech scored four runs. She finished the contest with seven strikeouts and only allowed four hits.
- For the Yellow Jackets, Kleinschmidt earned the game one win in a complete game effort. She allowed three hits and struck out 11 batters.
- In the second game of the doubleheader, Weiman's number was called again and she delivered with a complete game two-hitter to earn her 13th win of the year. She struck out eight batters, walked two and only allowed one run.
Game Notes
- Weiman recorded her 90th career victory with the win in game two, which ties her with Abbie Sims for the program mark. The Pasadena, Md., native will break the record with another victory this season.
- Davis reached base safely in both contests to extend her streak to 21 games, which matches the program record she set in 2013.
- Compton and Hutchison also reached base safely in both contests to stretch their reached base streaks to 14 and 11, respectively.
