Wolfpack Opens Outdoor Season with ACC Qualifying Marks

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - SeQuoia Watkins, Nicole Chavis and Jule Rich nabbed ACC qualifying marks, while many other came close to qualifying marks as the NC State track and field team opened the outdoor season at the Dennis Craddock Carolina Relays.
Javelin
Just like indoor season, Grant Rivers was the Pack's first competitor of the season. Rivers competed in the javelin throw, finishing sixth with a mark of 131'11.07".
Discus
Watkins and Chavis picked up NC State's first ACC qualifying marks of the season as the two finished first and third, respectively in the discus. Watkins threw for a distance of 163'6.99", and Chavis threw 151'8.07".
On the men's side, Rich finished second with a throw of 164'4.43" -- just two feet shy of tying his personal best. Joshua Davis rounded out the standings for the Wolfpack with a fifth-place finish of 140'7.79".
Shot Put
Rich picked up the Pack's third ACC qualifying mark and a second-place finish, while Joshua Davis earned fifth in the shot put. Rich launched a throw 53'1.01", and Davis threw a distance of 45'10.78".
On the women's side, Watkins and Alyssa Dunn came just short of qualifying for the conference meet. Watkins finished third with a throw of 43'11.95", and Dunn finished fourth with a mark of 43'11.56".
2,000m Steeple
Bakri Abushouk opened competition on the track for State with a first-place finish in the 2,000m steeplechase. Abushouk led the entire race, on his way to a time 6:01.27.
Rachel Bartolomeo ran unattached a finished sixth in the women's 2,000m steeplechase with a time of 7:07.53. Bartolomeo started strong with a split of 1:06.57. The freshman also had a strong final split and finished just a few seconds shy of third place.
200m Dash
The sprinters would have a strong first day as they sweep the top-spots in the 200m races. Quashawn Cunningham led the men with a first-place finish in the 200m dash. He finished with a time of 21.44, just .22 from an ACC qualifying mark.
On the women's side, NC State owned the top two times. Tiana Patillo picked up first with a time of 24.81, and Paisley Simmons followed in second with a finish of 24.95.
