Columbia, S.C. -The NC State men's tennis team defeated South Carolina 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at USC Fieldhouse in a match that went down to the wire and featured three comeback victories.
The Pack improved to 6-2 on the season, claiming its third straight match.
Match Recap:
State fell behind early, losing the doubles point for only the second time this season. South Carolina came out sharp and took the early lead in all three doubles matches. They picked up wins on courts one and two to clinch the doubles point. On court three, Nick Horton and Thomas Weigel's comeback attempt would go unfinished.
In singles, Robbie Mudge made his second appearance at No. 1 spot this season. He won in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 to tie the overall match at one. South Carolina won the next singles match on court four to go up 2-1, but Austin Powell responded with a three-set victory over No. 83 Andrew Schafer 6-7 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3) 6-1.
Minutes later, the Gamecocks took the lead for the third time to force NC State into a pair of must-win matches. The Pack showed its depth as it won both matches at the bottom of the lineup in straight sets.
Simon Norenius tied the match at three with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over South Carolina's Sam Swank. At the No. 6 singles spot, No. 39 Horton eased to a 6-1, 6-2 victory. After a rough start to his dual season, the sophomore came in clutch for the Pack. He has won three matches in a row.
Up Next:
NC State will return to action next weekend as it travels to Madison, Wis. for a Saturday contest against Drake and a Sunday match against Wisconsin.
