Softball Splits Pair of Games on Day Two in Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The NC State softball team split the second day of competition in the Florida Tournament, as the Wolfpack dropped a 5-3 decision to the top-ranked Gators before defeating Iowa in the nightcap, 6-5, Saturday evening at Pressly Stadium.
State improves to 3-5 on the young season, while No. 1 Florida remains unbeaten at 8-0 and Iowa falls to 3-4.
Quick Hits vs. Florida
- NC State had a tough first inning against top-ranked Florida, as the Gators plated two runs despite not having a hit in the frame. The Wolfpack settled in nicely after a rough start and held the Gators scoreless through the next two innings.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Florida extended its lead to 3-0 after scoring on a safety squeeze play. Wolfpack freshman Alyssa Compton ripped a double in the fifth and scored after senior Renada Davis reached on an error to make it 3-1.
- Sophomore Molly Hutchison led off the top of the sixth with a solo homer over the fence in left center as State cut the Florida lead to 3-2.
- The Gators added two runs in the bottom of the sixth and the Pack tacked on one in the seventh but Florida slipped past NC State, 5-3.
- Morgan Medford, a sophomore from Whitakers, N.C., hit a pinch-hit solo home run in the seventh for her first round-tripper of the season.
Quick Hits vs. Iowa
-The Wolfpack jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the contest following an RBI-single from sophomore Molly Hutchison. Junior Lana Van Dyken reached earlier in the frame with a stand up triple that bounced off the left field wall.
- Maggie Hawkins, a junior from Easton, Md., drove in the second run of the contest on an RBI-single to right field, as Hutchison scored from second base to make it 2-0 in favor of the Pack.
- In the bottom of the second, senior Renada Davis blasted her first home run of the season off the scoreboard in left center for a solo homer.
- Iowa countered with a run in the top of the third to trim the NC State lead to 3-1. The Hawkeyes had a big fifth inning, as they scored four runs to take a 5-3 lead.
- Hutchison smacked her second homer of the day in the bottom of the fifth to pull the Wolfpack to within one run of the Hawkeyes, 5-4. Junior Lana Van Dyken dropped an RBI-single into left field to score Compton and tie the game at five apiece.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Medford drove in the winning run for NC State on a single through the right side. Hawkins, who walked earlier in the frame, scored from second base on the play.
Inside the Box Score
- Compton, Medford and Hutchison each had one hit for the Wolfpack against Florida.
- Hawkins, Hutchison and Van Dyken led the Pack at the plate against Iowa, as each recorded two hits. Davis and Medford had the other hits of the day for NC State.
In the Pitcher’s Circle
- Sophomore Courtney Mirabella got the start for NC State in the circle against No. 1 Florida and pitched 4.1 innings before giving way to senior Emily Weiman in the fifth. Weiman threw the final 1.2 innings.
- Against Iowa, Weiman started in the circle and hurled a complete game, striking out four batters to earn the win.
Up Next
NC State will play No. 1 Florida for a third time this weekend at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday before returning to Raleigh.
