RALEIGH – The NC State women's basketball team improved to 7-2 on the season Sunday afternoon with a 72-65 win over a scrappy Charlotte team.
Sunday's victory marked head coach Wes Moore's 50th win at NC State (50-25), a mark which took him only 75 games to achieve. Fifty wins in his first 75 games at NC State ranks him fourth among active ACC coaches for the fewest games required to earn 50 wins at his current school. Only Jeff Walz (Louisville – 63 games), Joanne P. McCallie (Duke – 64), and Muffet McGraw (Notre Dame – 74) achieved this feat quicker than Moore.
The game against Charlotte (5-3) also marked sophomore forward Chelsea Nelson's first career start and freshman forward DD Rogers' first double-figure scoring game (11 points). Dominique Wilson (21 points) and Miah Spencer (13) also joined Rogers in double figures.
Fast Facts
-NC State collected more offensive rebounds (27) than Charlotte collected total rebounds (26).
-The Wolfpack shot 15-17 from the free-throw line (Spencer went 8-8).
-Spencer registered seven of NC State's 14 assists (.500).
-Four Wolfpack players collected six rebounds or more.
-Rogers was one rebound away from her first career double-double. She collected five offensive rebounds in her first four minutes of game action.
NC State took a 17-11 lead through the first quarter and weathered a strong second period from the visitors to take a narrow 32-29 lead into the halftime break. The 49ers took their first lead of the game 49 seconds into the third quarter when Lefty Webster (14 points) hit a jump shot to make it 33-32. Charlotte would extend its lead to two points (36-34) with 7:31 remaining in the third quarter.
Ciera Gregory (21 points, 6-10 shooting from distance) hit a three 29 seconds into the fourth quarter to pull the visitors within one, but Spencer drained a deep shot 16 seconds later to extend the Pack's lead to four. This first bucket was the start of a very strong quarter for Spencer, who scored 11 points in the closing frame to keep the 49ers at bay.
NC State returns to action at home on Sunday, December 13 against Elon. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. from Broughton High School's Holliday Gymnasium.
