RALEIGH – In a game which featured 49 fouls and 49 free-throw attempts, the NC State women's basketball team (7-3) fell to Elon (6-2) Sunday afternoon by a final score of 69-66.
The Wolfpack took a 50-49 lead into the fourth quarter and battled through four lead changes to hold a 62-60 advantage when Chelsea Nelson sank two free throws with 2:56 remaining. Elon would end the game on a 9-4 run to earn the victory despite the contest nearly being forced into overtime when Miah Spencer's half-court attempt missed by a matter of inches.
"We're just not a very smart team right now," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame radio interview. "We are committing careless turnovers, taking bad shots, and defensively, we have to be able to get out and guard better."
The Wolfpack was led offensively by 12 points from Spencer (seven assists), Jennifer Mathurin, and Dominique Wilson. Chelsea Nelson joined her teammates in double figures with 10 points. Freshman DD Rogers pulled down a team-high eight rebounds in addition to the seven points she scored on 3-5 shooting.
Elon's Lauren Brown led all scorers with 18 points on 5-6 shooting from the field. She was one of two Phoenix players to hit four three-pointers, as teammate Maddie McCallie scored 16 points on 4-6 shooting from distance.
