LINCOLN, Nebraska – The (RV/RV) NC State women's basketball team (6-2) dropped a tough road contest Thursday evening in the 2015 installment of the B1G/ACC Challenge, falling to (RV/RV) Nebraska by a final score of 88-67.
Led by Dominique Wilson's 18 points, the Wolfpack out-rebounded Nebraska 46-38 but struggled from the field in the loss, shooting 23-67 (.343). The Huskers (5-1) were led offensively by 20 points from Rachel Theriot, had five players score in double figures, and shot 37-70 (.529) from the field.
Sophomore forward Chelsea Nelson scored a career-high 15 points on 6-10 shooting and junior Jennifer Mathurin also chipped in 14 points and six rebounds. Despite struggling from the field at a 2-8 clip, junior guard Miah Spencer had a strong all-around game, grabbing a team-high eight rebounds in addition to her seven assists and two steals.
"First of all, you've got to give Nebraska a lot of credit," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in the postgame press conference. "They shot the ball well and executed at a high level. The run in the second quarter was when we really let the game get away from us."
In a first half which featured three ties and six lead changes, the Wolfpack got off to a hot start early. NC State traded runs with the Huskers in the early going, pulling the game level at 21 points apiece with 6:08 remaining. Nebraska caught fire at this point, scoring 20 straight points to end the first half while simultaneously holding the Wolfpack scoreless throughout the final 6:07 en route to claiming a 41-21 lead. The Huskers shot 8-13 from the field to close out the first half.
The Wolfpack ran out to a 7-2 run very early in the third quarter, closing the gap to 15 points (43-28) to force a Nebraska timeout just 82 seconds into the second half. Once the Huskers extended their lead back to 20 points (48-28), NC State would trim it back down to 16 points on three occasions, but would come no closer throughout the rest of the contest.
"I'm proud of the way our kids came back in the second half and battled some," Moore added. "I thought Chelsea (Nelson) did a great job inside attacking. Again, we've just got to get better. We had way too many turnovers, allowed too many easy buckets in transition, and had too many breakdowns on the defensive end."
NC State now returns home for three straight contests at Broughton High School. The home stand begins on Sunday, December 6 against Charlotte. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on GoPack.com.
