Three Stripe Invite Offers Insight Into Pack’s Future

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State cross country team will host the Three Stripe Invite Saturday at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. Competitors from Appalachian State, Charlotte, Duke, Elon, Longwood, North Carolina UNC-Greensboro and NC State will line up in the race.
The men will race at 11:00 a.m., followed by the women at 11:30 a.m. Both races will be 5,000m.
The Three Stripe Invite has traditionally provided local schools with a late-season cross country meet to give its student-athletes another valuable race opportunity. Last year, the Pack raced 12 unattached athletes.
While the race might not be as prolific as the NCAA Regionals that follow, the results can give an insight to the team's future lineup.
In last year's women's race, Rachel Koon led the Pack in the unattached standings, finishing second overall. After her strong showing in Cary, Koon continued her cross country season at the USA Championships and eventually ran for Team USA at the Pan-Am Games in Columbia.
This season, the Arden, N.C., native continued her success, scoring in every meet this season – including All-ACC honors after finishing ninth at the ACC Championships.
As a high-school senior, Ryen Frazier won the race by a dominating 48 seconds. She went on to represent Team USA at the Bupa Great XC Challenge in Scotland.
This season, Frazier has established herself as the Pack's top runner. She opened her season with two straight wins and has led the team in three of the four races this season.
On the men's side, Zack Langston also parlayed his success at the Three Stripe Invite to a bigger role the following year. In 2014, Langston finished third for the Pack in unattached standings. This season, he has run in each of the team's races. He was the men's fifth scorer at the ACC Championships and finished 10th overall at the adidas XC Challenge.
In 2013, Sebastian Hanson and Bakri Abushouk both finished top three as unattached runners, while Alyssa Rudawsky was third in the women's race. All three are key members on the 2015 squad.
This year, five unattached runners and four underclassmen will line up in the race, as they look to develop towards future track and cross country seasons.
