Wolfpack Volleyball Drops Battle with Pittsburgh on Senior Night

NC State hangs tight, but falls in five-set match
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State volleyball team fell in its final home match of the year to Pittsburgh, 3-2 (28-30, 25-22, 25-22, 21-25, 15-11), Saturday night inside Carmichael Gym.Â

The Wolfpack moves to 15-13 (4-12 ACC), while Pitt improves to 21-7 (11-5 ACC). Seniors Tanna Aljoe and Morgan Cormier were honored prior to the match for their contributions during their careers on senior night.

Match Rewind
- NC State held a big lead throughout the first set, leading by as many as six points. A Pitt rally tied the match at 22, then again at 24 to send the opening set to extra points. NC State held tough, fighting off three different set points and eventually won, 30-28.
- The two teams were inseparable for the majority of the second set. Pitt pulled out to a late, 21-18 lead and NC State attempted to claw back into the match and fought off a set point, but ultimately fell 25-22.
- Pitt continued its strong play in the third set, as NC State trailed for most of the frame. A late rally tied the score at 20, but the Panthers responded well with a 5-2 run to close out the set and move to a 2-1 overall lead.
- In a must-win situation, NC State responded well to take the fourth set, 25-21. Sophomores Julia Brown and Perry Ramsey, along with freshman Blayke Hranicka each tallied four kills in the set to extend the match to a fifth set.
- In the final set, NC State jumped out to an 11-9 lead, but Pitt closed the match with six straight points to escape with the 3-2 victory.

Match Highlights:
- Brown led the way for the Pack with 17 kills and four blocks. Hranicka and senior Morgan Cormier also tallied double-digit kills with 13 and 10, respectively.
- Junior setter Maggie Speaks tallied 48 assists, seven digs and five blocks in the contest.
- Three Wolfpackers reached double-digit digs. Junior Rachel Eppley paced the squad with 16 digs and freshman Kassie Kasper recorded 11. Senior Tanna Aljoe chipped in with 10 digs.
- Sophomore Kaitlyn Kearney was a force at the net, matching her career-best with a match-high 12 blocks and seven kills.
