Volleyball Comes Up Short at No. 22 UNC-Chapel Hill, 3-1

Sophomore Julia Brown charts seventh consecutive match with double-digit kills
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The NC State volleyball team went head-to-head with 22nd-ranked UNC-Chapel Hill, but fell in four sets, 3-1 (25-19, 25-18, 20-25, 25-14), Wednesday night inside Carmichael Arena.
The Wolfpack falls to 15-14 and 4-13 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play, while the Tar Heels move to 18-8 and 15-2 in league action.
Match Notes
- NC State won the third set for the 21st time this season. In 29 matches this year, the Pack has only lost the set after the intermission eight times.
- For the seventh consecutive match, Julia Brown tallied double-digit kills. The sophomore outside hitter put down 13 kills and has swatted 10 or more in her last seven matches.
Match Rewind
- NC State battled the 22nd-ranked UNC-Chapel Hill in the first set, but a 5-1 run helped the squad pull ahead and the Tar Heels went on to win the frame, 25-19.
- Sophomore Perry Ramsey had a big first set for the Wolfpack, putting down six kills to go along with a .385 attacking percentage.
- Both teams had strong offensive starts to the match, as North Carolina hit .351 and NC State hit .314.
- UNC started fast in the second set, but the young Wolfpack continued to fight and claw its way back into the frame. After the Tar Heels opened the set on a 7-2 run, NCSU countered to trim the deficit to 13-10.
- From there, North Carolina used its experience to pull away from NC State and win the set, 25-18.
- NC State won a tightly-contested third set, which featured eight ties and three lead changes, 25-20. Trailing 18-17, a kill by freshman Blayke Hranicka sparked a 7-2 run for the Wolfpack as the squad went on to win it.
- UNC pulled away from the Wolfpack midway through the fourth set en route to winning the frame, 25-14 and the overall match, 3-1.
Top Performers
- Ramsey led the Pack offensively with 14 kills, while Brown contributed 13.
- Junior Maggie Speaks handed out 34 assists from her setter position, to go along with eight kills and six digs.
- Defensively, junior libero Rachel Eppley charted 18 digs and freshman defensive specialist Kassie Kasper pitched in with 12.

NC State will next be in action Friday night when it takes on the Virginia Cavaliers. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. inside Memorial Gym.
