No. 22 NC State men's soccer earned a scoreless draw against the top RPI squad in the nation, No. 4 Wake Forest, on Friday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.
"This is a game we would have lost last year," said NC State head coach Kelly Findley. "We have the desire to do the little things. The players care about each other. They're willing to do what it takes to get results."
The Pack (6-2-3, 1-1-3 ACC) created a pair of opportunities in the two overtime periods to none for the Deacons (9-1-2, 3-0-2). State matched the powerful Wake side on shots, 12-12, landing seven on target to six for the visitors.
State's best chance may have been the 105th minute, when Caleb Duvernay's corner found Holden Fender at the left post for a header on frame. Ade Taiwo set up the opportunity on a breakaway of his own, thanks to an upfield pass by Ryan Peterson. The converging Wake Forest keeper and defender deflected that shot over the end line, earning a corner.
In the 68th minute, Philip Carmon found his way into the Wake box before going to the turf. In the 24th minute, Duvernay connected with Fender on a corner that forced a Deacon save.
Alex McCauley finished the match with six saves, one shy of his season-high set against Furman on August 28, and his third shutout of the season, ninth career.
"We shut out the No. 1 RPI team in the country, and got another point in the ACC," said Findley. "We've been telling our guys this is the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Everybody we've played in the last two weeks will be there, including us. This is what it looks like."
NC State returns to action on Tuesday, October 13 to host South Carolina at 7 PM.
