No. 20 NC State men's soccer mounted a thrilling comeback behind three points from Zach Knudson to escape with a 2-1 win over No. 14 South Carolina on Tuesday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.
"We have a great team spirit," said NC State head coach Kelly Findley. "Good attitude and work rate, great quality on the field. I'm pleased for the guys. I think they've really adopted a mentality and team identity."
The Wolfpack (7-2-3) found itself mired in a 1-0 deficit after a Gamecock (7-4-1) goal broke the scoreless tie in the 46th minute, headed in off a South Carolina corner.
State pressed forward, outshooting the Gamecocks 15-7 for the match and 12-3 in the second half, but had to wait until the 76th minute for an equalizer. Ryan Peterson scored his second goal of the year, heading in a chip from the right side by Knudson.
With regulation ticking away, the Pack looked primed for its fourth-straight overtime, but Knudson had other plans. In the 87th minute, Knudson made a miraculous run through traffic, before slipping his fifth goal of the season past the South Carolina keeper.
The Wolfpack's sturdy defense did the rest, salting away the final seconds to preserve a 2-1 victory.
NC State returns to action Friday, October 16 at Duke on ESPN3. Live stats will be available on GoPack.com. Fans may also follow along with Twitter updates via @PackMensSoccer.
